It will be very hard to believe that it exist a phobia for wine. However, it is a real clinical disorder known as oenophobia. Perhaps we have once felt a little scare when tasting an unknown wine, or even when we see a very high or low price for a wine. But none of those feelings is the same that the anxiety generated by this drink to those who suffer from this phobia.

Like all phobias, oenophobia is an uncontrollable and irrational fear; directed, in this case, to the wine. This disease is associated with methyphobia or fear of alcoholic beverages. In both cases, the basis of their dislike for these drinks is the possibility of suffering severe poisoning when eaten. The simple idea that this can occur causes extreme anxiety in those who suffer from this unusual condition. Tremors, respiratory problems, abdominal pain and nausea are some of the symptoms that can occur in these people simply by seeing a glass or bottle of wine.

The rarity of this condition has made gastronomy experts say that -beyond its clinical definition- true fear lies in those who, despite enjoying this drink, do not dare to taste new wines. And is that with such a wide variety of wineries, denomination of origin and grapes, why wouldn’t you be willing to reward your palates with new and pleasurable experiences?

If you are one of those who has the lucky to not suffer from clinical oenophobia, we invite you to not fall into its gastronomic version. The secret is to remain always ready to try new wines for your palate, avoiding prejudices related to price, origin or plain misinformation. A broad universe of flavors and sensations behind each grape, wine, and wineries are willing to be discovered; as long as your body and health allow it.
