German wines have been a tradition for a long time and their popularity is increasing a lot. To know more about these wines it's necessary to know something about Germany's major wine regions.

The areas are divided into 13 designations of origin with an average size of 100,000 hectares each one and the vast majority is concentrated in the South and Southwestern part, given the better weather conditions for processing.

Its most important strains are the Riesling and Müller-Thurgau, bestsellers that are cultivated to achieve fresh white wines. Most of the European countries benefit from their exportation, especially Great Britain, and overseas, the United States.

Some of the German wine regions are Ahr, Baden, Franken, Hessische Bergstrasse, Mittelrhein, Nahe, Pfalz, Rheinhessen, Saale-Unstrut and Württemberg.

Ahr wine region

The landscapes of this wine region are carried out by the river that holds his name, along with hills and rocks. It has 552 hectares of cultivated wines and a large majority of its production are red wines, with varieties of Pinot Noir, the Portugieser, Dornfelder and Frühburgunder. The most widespread white grape of the area is the Riesling, with 41 hectares of surface. Much of the local wine growers have a secondary activity, while a new generation of young winemakers who are reviving the sector in this area is growing very fast. Moreover, it's one of the country's smallest wine regions.

Baden area

With an out-of-this-world landscape, Baden offers a sunny and warm weather, becoming one of the best areas for wine production. In this case, 60% of the vineyards is formed by white grapes, while the remainder corresponds to red grapes. The region's most significant variety is the Spätburgunder, with the famous variety Burgunder (Pinot) besides the white Riesling and Müller-Thurgau; that's why Baden is also known as the "Burgunder paradise". It is noteworthy that the wineries here are mostly held by a family with over 77 subsidiaries and 400 wine farms.
